Substantive editing: Typically for longer text or manuscripts, shaping or reorganizing draft material. May include revising, cutting, expanding, or reordering text. Also known as structural editing, developmental editing, or content editing.
Stylistic editing: Clarifying and smoothing language, eliminating jargon, and other line-by-line interventions.
Copy editing: Focuses on spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage, including making sure that numbers, capitalization, abbreviations, citations, and so on are handled consistently according to an appropriate editorial style. May include providing or changing system of citations; editing indexes, tables, figures, and lists; and checking for internal mechanical and factual consistency.
Fact checking / Reference checking: Checking accuracy of facts and/or quotes by reference to original sources used by author and/or from other sources.
Proofreading: Checking material after final editing and layout, verifying design specifications, checking for introduced errors, like missing text or bad word breaks, completing a final pass to look for straggling spelling, punctuation, or other mechanical issues.
